Depending on the massage therapist work with, or the venue you frequent, the massage modalities that each therapist practices will vary. At Kamati Massage the team is certified and well-versed in 5 different massage modalities: corrective massage, restorative massage, Thai yoga bodywork, pre/post natal massage, and Maya Abdominal Massage. Each modality serves a unique purpose, which we cover below.

Massage Modality 1: Corrective Massage

Corrective massage utilizes traditional massage techniques, myofascial release, and assisted stretching to create a rehabilitative focused therapy.  Each tailored session includes home care suggestions designed to support and maintain the effects of the session. The overall rehabilitative effect of corrective massage is the changing of muscle tissue tension and correction of postural imbalances.  This combination corrects and relieves current pain as well as prevents future injury.

It is an ancient healing system combining acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles and assisted yoga postures.  The client is completely clothed in loose fitting clothing such as yoga clothes. This style of bodywork is performed on a cushioned mat on the floor where the therapist will be using their hands, feet, knees, and elbows to open up energy lines, and muscles.

Massage relieves many of the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches and edema (or swelling).

Pre and Post Natal Massage is good for:

  • Reduce Swelling

Massage Modality 5: Maya Abdominal Massage

Maya abdominal massage is a traditional healing technique practiced for thousands of years by the Maya people and similarly by other indigenous cultures around the world. It is a non-invasive external technique performed slowly and gently, intended to create balance and circulation back into the energetic center of our being. In particular, it focuses on the lower abdomen and pelvic region which holds the uterus and reproductive organs.

The treatment gently manipulates the muscles, fascia, ligaments, and other connective tissues that hold the digestive and reproductive organs in place. Displacement to these organs may occur due to trauma, many years of poor posture, repetitive habits, or muscles that have become lax or too tense, while the massage technique stimulates blood flow, loosens adhesions and encourages organs to re-align to the optimal position. This allows the uterus to be more receptive to nutrient/oxygen-rich blood, increase nerve communication, and improve the flow of chi/prana/ch’ulel/life force.

Energetically speaking, many Maya healers focus their entire treatment on the abdomen, as the abdomen is the storehouse of human emotions. Emotions such as fear, anger & resentment, tighten the muscle fibers around the arteries and organs, blocking blood flow. Having some clearing in the area allows for blockages to be released and healed.
